Why Investing in Your Team is a No-Brainer

Brooke Silva

I recently sat down with Authority Magazine in August of 2024 to talk about something near and dear to me: investing in our people through Continuous Professional Development (CPD). My belief is simple—our greatest asset isn’t technology, systems, or even the business model. It’s our people. And when we invest in their growth, we’re setting up the entire organization for long-term success.

When I look back on my own career journey, it all started in 2009 with a two-hour daily commute for a part-time admin job. That experience taught me grit and gave me an appreciation for growth, no matter how slow or challenging. Over time, I climbed the ladder, eventually landing in leadership roles that allowed me to lean into my passion for training and development. Today, I’m on a mission to make CPD a priority—not just a nice-to-have, but a game-changer for our team and business.

Here’s why I believe CPD is worth every penny:

It Builds Skills that Matter – CPD is all about giving people the tools they need to excel and grow. It keeps our team adaptable and ready to tackle any challenge.

It Boosts Engagement – When we invest in our team’s growth, they feel valued and stay engaged. It’s like a feedback loop of positivity and productivity.

Retention Goes Up – People stick around when they feel invested in. They want to stay with companies that support their personal and professional development.

Innovation and Fresh Ideas – A culture of learning inspires creativity. When we’re open to growth, new perspectives and ideas naturally follow.

We’re Growing Future Leaders – CPD builds our “bench” of future leaders, ensuring we’re equipped for success well into the future.

One of the first CPD initiatives I rolled out was using the Keller Personality Assessment (KPA) to get to know my team better. I’m not just interested in their roles—I want to understand who they are and what drives them. By tailoring growth plans to each person’s strengths and goals, we’ve built a team that feels seen, heard, and supported.

Yes, CPD takes time and investment, but it’s worth every bit of effort. And as leaders, we owe it to our teams to stay curious and always be learning, right alongside them.
